Application Laboratory Manager - Gloucestershire

An international manufacturer of biochemistry products based in Gloucestershire seeks an experienced laboratory manager to oversee their operation.

The core focus of the role will be on innovation to drive growth in the markets across the company in savoury flavour, dairy, nutrition, meals, beverage and fats & oils.

Duties and responsibilities:

The role of the Application Laboratory Manager will include but not be limited to:

• Oversee the development of new product applications from ideas to commercialisation;
• Support innovation across multiple end users ensuring new application meet the requirements of customers;
• Interpreting data in order to provide a technical direction to projects;
• Measure R & D performance against business objectives;
• Seek out and create new joint venture opportunities;
• Communicate benefits of the technologies developed internally and externally through clear and concise oral and written communications
• Maintain an up to date knowledge of the market and competitors
• Develop and maintain partnerships with Customers, Universities and Research Institutes
• Establish business relationships with subject matter experts and negotiate development contracts
• Develop external strategic relationships with technical counterparts;
• Partner with sales and marketing and other research laboratories to provide a research and development strategy for changing market conditions
• Share development resources across the group to deliver on group priorities

Day to day duties include:

• Select, develop and motivate staff at the laboratory to fulfil their function
• Expansion of knowledge and experience of food industry production processes and requirements by discussion with external sources (where appropriate);
• Developing new applications to meet new or existing customer requirements;
• Development of new techniques with HPLC, GC, and other appropriate technology (including SEC/GFC) to meet current and future requirements backed by the resources required;
• Resolving customer queries from a wide range of food processing industries;
• Developing a working relationship with scientific staff at the Gifu R&D centre;
• Producing project reports for customers, and internal technical staff. This may result in presentations to scientific staff, managers and also to customers from time to time;
• Working on a joint database with other research staff;
• Training new and visiting laboratory staff;
• Preparation or supervision of samples for analysis or testing;
• Selection and adaptation of most appropriate methods and techniques from a variety of possibilities;
• Independently performing tests or analyses using a variety of methods and techniques, which may require solving problems inherent with the methodology; calculating results, evaluating findings and determining need for further analysis; preparing comprehensive reports which document methodology, evaluating findings and explaining other information pertinent to the analysis;
• Operating, tests and calibrating analytical instruments, equipment and related components or arranging for external parties to do so and contacting the supplier or manufacturer in the event of equipment failure to effect repair;
• Maintaining all working systems either technological or administrative (e.g. registration of new chemicals, filing of MSDS literature);
• Maintaining in tidy working order the laboratory, equipment, instruments and related apparatus;
• Managing the laboratory operation, with responsibility for the quality and quantity of the work of others, proper maintenance of laboratory conditions, safety procedures, equipment, instruments and supplies, files and records;
• Hiring, training, supervising and evaluating staff; determines work schedules and work assignments;
• Preparing budget requests and manages approved budget;
• Initiate purchases of equipment and supplies; maintains contact with vendors and ordering reagents, consumables, glassware and other materials where necessary;
• Maintaining and developing necessary work systems (e.g. registration of new reagents, MSDS, COSHH, risk assessments);
• Keeping abreast of development in area of expertise and related scientific fields through reading of scientific journals and technical papers; adapting new technology as appropriate to meet changing laboratory needs or improving effectiveness or efficiency;
• Participating in discussions of research protocols and objectives.

Ideal candidate:

• An enzyme expert who has
• A master’s degree or a doctorate in Enzymology, Bio Chemistry, Food Science or a related subject is required;
• 15+ years experience in the food industry with at least ten of those years spent managing technical individuals;
• Strong industrial experience in product innovation in the food industry and enzymology is required
• You must be open to occasional travel, mainly within Europe, Asian and the United States
