Vol.3 – Pursuing a Dream to London: Discovering New Challenges in the Recruitment Industry
As our Meet the Team series continues into 2025, we sat down with one of our recruitment consultants, Teruhito “Terry” Komatsu, to discuss his 1.5-year tenure at CPA. Known as an avid Chelsea fan who came to the UK to follow his favourite team, Terry has since become a valued and trusted consultant.

Briefly, how did you get started in recruitment?

“After moving to the UK, I worked in the financial industry for six years. Unfortunately, the company I worked for closed, so I contacted Centre People to help me find a new role. But I actually found CPA to be a really attractive company. I thought that helping other job seekers as well as our clients sounded quite fun really. It’s a career that allows me to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives—and so I decided to pursue it.”
What’s something your clients and candidates might be surprised to learn about you?
“I actually once won a European football quiz competition in Japan in 2008 – the prize was a trip to watch the Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester United in Moscow. This was actually an unforgettable experience that sparked my dream of moving to London. I’m good at quizzes, and my ability to deeply research topics, accumulate knowledge, and work persistently towards goals has been invaluable throughout my career”

We all know you’re a huge football fan, but do you have any other hobbies or hidden talents?

“I’m a gadget enthusiast, I stay updated on the latest tech trends, from PCs, smartphones, and smartwatches to earphones, keyboards, chargers, and even USB cables. This passion isn’t just beneficial in my personal life but also contributes to my work. Recently, I’ve developed a strong interest in AI, as you might expect. I’m always happy to give advice or opinions on the newest tech.”
How has working in recruitment changed you personally?
“Over time, I’ve become more curious about the world around me, it’s strange how it affects you. For instance, in my role, I sometimes support positions in the logistics sector, so when travelling abroad, I’ve started noticing trucks near airports and thinking about the company’s operation and what the workers are doing. It’s quite eye opening how these important businesses operate in the background of our lives”
Is there a piece of advice from a colleague or family member that’s stuck with you?
“A phrase I once read in a book—not from a colleague or family member—has become one of my guiding principles: “90% of your anxieties never happen.” People often let their minds imagine worst-case scenarios, leading to unnecessary stress. In reality, negative events are rare, and our most imagined fears are far worse than what actually happens. Instead of dwelling on these thoughts, I try to focus on what’s in front of me and take action.”
What’s the most rewarding part of connecting people with the right opportunity?
“One of the reasons I joined CPA was its philosophy: “making everyone involved happy.” I find it incredibly rewarding when job seekers secure roles that advance their careers while companies benefit by growing their businesses. Those moments where everyone involved feels genuinely happy are what I value most, both as part of Centre People and as an individual.”
With 2025 kicking off, what’s your new year’s resolution?
“To be honest, I didn’t realise it, but I think I’ve grown into a mid-level position within the company. As we prepare to welcome new members, I aim to become someone capable of guiding and inspiring them—just like Chelsea’s legendary captain, John Terry.”

We’re lucky to have Terry on our team – feel free to connect with him and follow us to meet more of our fantastic consultants!
